Top 10 Wedding Design Mistakes

As a Central Illinois Wedding Designer, and a recent Bride, I know that one of the most exciting parts of being engaged is choosing the decorations. However, its not uncommon for brides to end up overwhelmed. With magazines, blogs, Pinterest, and Instagram it’s so easy for Bride’s to make design mistakes that negatively impact the look and feel of their wedding. This disappointment then lives on forever in their photos.

So, to help ensure that your wedding is an aesthetic success, I’ve put together a list of the top 10 design mistakes couples make when planning their wedding.

NOT HAVING A CLEAR VISION

Before you start choosing a venue, colors, decor, flowers, and dresses, you need to have clear vision of what you want your wedding to look like. Take some time to think about the style, theme, colors, and fonts you want to incorporate into your wedding decor. This will help you make more intentional choices when it comes to decor as well.

TOO TRENDY

Everyone says they want their wedding to be timeless. That they don’t want to look back at their wedding photos in 20 years and have regrets. But, when push comes to shove, many couples choose to incorporate trendy pieces that come and go too quickly. Instead, focus on pieces that will stand the test of time.

remember the venue

Make sure you consider the venue when selecting your decorations. For example, if you select a venue that has a lot of natural wood or stone features, you will want to incorporate decor that have a similar aesthetic.

how much

When it comes to how many decorations to incorporate, it can be tricky. It’s important not to go overboard with decorations and make the space feel cluttered or overwhelming. But its also important to not leave wide open space that don’t serve a purpose.

neglect the details

We love to put them on our Pinterest Boards and “like” them on Instagram, but when it comes to actually paying attention to the small details, some couples get overwhelmed and neglect it all together. That’s where having a professional wedding designer to assist you can help.

Trust me, these little details like table settings, place cards, and even bathroom decor are what gives your photo gallery some variety and create a cohesive and memorable look.

DIY

DIY decorations are a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your wedding day. However, there’s a fine line between DIY decor that looks polished and cohesive vs. DIY decor that looks homemade.

ONLY FOCUSING ON THE TABLES

Yes, your centerpieces and head table are important, but its also important not to forget the rest of the room. Make sure that each space has a purpose and that decorations are evenly distributed through the space to make an inviting atmosphere.

INAUTHENTIC DECOR

Its important to choose decorations that reflect your personality and style as a couple. Don’t choose certain colors or decor simply because they are popular or because someone else likes them. Take the time at the beginning of your planning process to evaluate who you guys are as a couple and then select pieces that truly speak to you.

Not sure where to begin with this? Don’t fret. There are professionals out there— like myself— to assist in this process.

stressed out

Lastly, its important to remember that your wedding day is about more than decorations. Don’t get so caught up in the details and forget to enjoy each and every moment of one of the most important days of your lives. Your wedding should be a worry-free celebration for both you and your partner.
